Nike takes these issues very seriously and is taking immediate action to protect the rights of workers in its Malaysian supply chain. We are committed to comprehensively addressing the issues identified at Hytex and to continued follow-up to help ensure changes are lasting.

Nike has taken decisive action and has required Hytex to make the following non-negotiable and immediate changes:

1. All current migrant workers will be reimbursed for fees associated with employment including but not limited to recruiting fees paid to agents and worker permit fees.

2. Going forward, any and all fees associated with employment will be paid by the factory as a cost of doing business.

3. Any worker who wishes to return home will be provided with return airfare, pumas shoesirrespective of their contract requirements.

4. The majority of housing has been found to be unacceptable. All workers will be transitioned into new Nike-inspected and approved housing within 30 days. This transition has already begun.

5. All workers will have immediate and total free access to their passports. No restrictions.

HRD ministry refutes allegations made by Nike

Human Resource Ministry of Malaysia has refuted accusations made by Nike Inc, alleging ill-treatment of foreign factory workers at their supply factory in Kepong.

Nike Inc had said in a statement to the media that it had been monitoring the activities of the said factory and found that around 1,200 foreign workers were subjected to unacceptable living conditionscheap goggles,passports withheld and salaries cut to pay agency fees.

Dr S.Subramaniam from the ministry confidently brushed aside the allegations made by the sports brand on grounds that a thorough investigation of the Hytex Apparel factory reported no violation of labor laws.

During a press conference held on Tuesday, Mr Subramanium pointed out that, “salaries given to the foreign workers are broken down into basic pay, overtime and attendance allowances. Nike names Mr Eric Sprunk as VP of Product

Nike Q1 profit falls, sales grow

NIKE Inc announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 first quarter ended August 31, 2008. Revenue grew 17 percent to $5.4 billion, compared to $4.7 billion for the same period last year. Changes in currency exchange rates increased revenue growth by 7 percentage points for the quarter. First quarter net income decreased 10 percent to $510.5 million, compared to $569.7 million in the prior year.

Diluted earnings per share decreased 8 percent to $1.03, versus $1.12 last year. In the prior year’s first quarter, the Company received a one-time tax benefit of $105.4 million, which contributed $0.20 per diluted share. Adjusted for this prior year benefit, net income and earnings per share would have grown 10% and 12%, respectively.

“Nike’s first-quarter results reflect the strength of our brands and our global business,” said NIKE, Inc. President and CEO Mark Parker. “Our relentless focus on product innovation and premium consumer experiences generated balanced growth across every region and market share gains in key categories.”

Parker concluded, “Nike is able to connect with consumers and energize the market like nobody else. As we combine that with running a strong and smart business, we generate new growth, deliver strong cash flows, and create greater value for our shareholders.”

Futures Orders:
The Company reported worldwide futures orders for athletic footwear and apparel, scheduled for delivery from September 2008 through January 2009, totaling $6.8 billion, 10 percent higher than such orders reported for the same period last year. Changes in currency exchange rates increased reported orders growth by 1 percentage point.

By region, futures orders for the U.S. were up 3 percent; Europe (which includes the Middle East and Africa) increased 4 percent; and Asia Pacific and the Americas each grew 27 percent. Changes in currency exchange rates did not have a significant impact on reported futures orders growth in Europe, but did increase reported futures orders growth by 3 percentage points in the Asia Pacific and Americas regions.

Nike names Kris Aman VP & GM of Men’s Athletic

NIKE Inc announced the appointment of Nike veteran Kris Aman as Vice President and GM of Men’s Athletic Training.

Aman will lead an integrated consumer-oriented focus across footwear, apparel and equipment for Men’s Athletic Training as part of Nike’s category brand management strategy for core business segments.

He will also have responsibility for American football and baseball, two important sports for Nike that are closely aligned with training. Kris, who will report to Trevor Edwards, Nike’s Vice President of Global Brand and Category Management, succeeds Peter Ruppe.

“Kris is a seasoned and dynamic leader with a proven track record of creating innovative, deep and rich brand experiences,” Edwards said. “He takes over a strong business and we look forward to his leadership as we drive and grow our training business worldwide.”

Aman has been with Nike for 12 years and most recently served as the Global GM of Beijing ‘08. Kris was responsible for leading the global business vision for the Beijing effort — one of the most ambitious and successful brand projects in Nike’s history.
